Deaf St. Peters man hears daughter sing for the first time

Ken Stehle's got to hear his daughter sing a solo at the Villa Duchesne High School's Christmas concert for the first time Sunday. St. Louis TV station KSDK-TV has a video report below. No captions but you can read the story here.

I am an audiologist and this is an FM system made by Phonak (manufacturer of hearing aids and other hearing technology). They make good products and FM systems are actually quite old, although they are always attempting to improve the technology (hence the "this technology has only been available for 12 months"). An FM system does not necessarily need to be used with a hearing aid, although the two can work together nicely. From what I can gather, it seems that this man is profoundly hard of hearing and has not been wearing any type of hearing aids, but perhaps he chose to get a hearing aid and FM system primarily so that he could hear her sing? The main goal of the FM system to to reduce challenges imposed by distance and noise -- so hearing your daughter onstage through a large room or auditorium setting is a perfect use for this technology.
