Scholar: What ASL does for children

A California researcher says there's a strong correlation between ASL fluency and English literacy among the deaf. If true, this supports a common belief that ASL plays a significant role in the academic development of deaf children. Tom Humphries at UC San Diego is exploring a teacher preparation program that "combines best practices in bilingual education and deaf education."
