HDMI cables are necessary for getting the best picture and sound on an HDTV, but they do not transmit closed-caption data. The way to get around this problem is to enable closed-captioning from your cable or satellite box or DVR. That way, the box decodes the signal and sends it along in a format the TV can recognize. Some set-top boxes have no switch for closed captions. For these sets, you must set the option through the main setup menu for the box.
