An Albuquerque attorney settled with a deaf client last year for $1,000 in damages because he failed to provide an interpreter. Joseph Camacho was handling a lawsuit on behalf of Carolyn Tanaka – who was suing a local hospital for not providing a sign language interpreter for son. Camacho withdrew from Tanaka case and the
National Association of the Deaf filed a complaint on her behalf with the
US Justice Department. Camacho agreed to change his office policy and provide an interpreter for any deaf client.
