Company Sued over Treatment of Deaf Job Applicant

A Denver company is being sued for refusing to hire a qualified deaf person, according to an EEOC lawsuit. Carefree of Colorado told Anna Biryukova the wouldn't hire her because her deafness could be a “challenge” and present “safety issues.” Carefree declined to comment. Son: Deaf Parents Mistreated by Airline

Nikolay Filatov says his parents, both of whom are deaf, were not treated well by Frontier Airlines. They were trying to get to their only grandchild's first birthday party. Denver-7 has a video report.

Suit: Denver Cops Failed to Provide Terp

Two deaf Colorado women are suing Denver law enforcement for failing to provide them with qualified sign language interpreters. According to the Denver Post, "The suit claims the agencies ignored repeated requests for qualified sign language interpreters, failed to follow their own policies and broke state and federal anti-discrimination laws in the process." Deaf Camp Vandalized

Someone has vandalized the Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Colorado. The camp rented out its cabins to Airbnb guests this past weekend while Aspen hosted the X-Games, according to KUSA-TV. But one of the groups caused about $4,000 of damages to the camp's common area. Denver woman’s lawsuit Leads to Captioning at Pepsi Center

The owner of Denver’s Pepsi Center has made an agreement to settle a lawsuit over captioning. If a judge approves, the Kroenke Arena Company would be required to provide captioning on the video boards inside the arena for nearly all the sporting events. Kirstin Kurlander, who is deaf, filed the original suit and is quoted as saying, “I am happy that Kroenke and the Pepsi Center have agreed to provide captioning at the Pepsi Center so deaf and hard of hearing patrons will finally have equal access to the games at that arena.” Read more from the Denver Post here.

Deaf Man Killed by Train

A Colorado deaf man was hit and killed today afternoon by train while he was crossing the tracks. KDVR-TV has surveillance video from a neighboring business in the video report below.

Lawsuit: Sports Arena not ADA complient

A class action lawsuit has been filed against a Denver arena. The jumbotron at the Pepsi Center could provide captioning.. but doesn't. Students get to Vote

Turning shelter dogs into service dogs

A Colorado organization that finds "dogs from local animal shelters and trains them to be hearing dogs for people who are deaf and hard-of-hearing by identifying noises like alarms" is getting some attention in the Denver Post. The executive director of International Hearing Dog told the newspaper, ""When a dog is matched with a person and they come together as partners, it's an incredible, emotional thing." First Gene Therapy

Rob Gerk became the first person to receive gene therapy to restore his hearing back in October at the University of Kansas Hospital, according to Denver's KUSA-TV. The television station reports that Gerk's doctors will have a better idea whether the procedure worked this month. Suit: Hospital didn't provide terps

Denver's Rose Medical Center is facing a lawsuit that accuses the hospital of not providing qualified interpreters for deaf patients. Ronald Zapko and John Towery say a Video Relay Interpreter set up didn't do the job.Read more about the suit in the Denver Post here.

Drummer gets implants

Deaf musician Doug Lagasse lost his hearing to cystic fibrosis treatment. That was more than a decade ago. This week, he got some of that hearing back at the University of Colorado Hospital where he was given a cochlear implant. Hospital sued over Terp

A Denver hospital is being sued for failing to provide a patient a sign language interpreter. The Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition is suing Porter Adventist Hospital on behalf of Cynthia Mullen. A rehabilitation facility is also named in the suit. You can read the suit itself here.

Colorado Settlement

Arapahoe County and the city of Englewood, a Denver suburb will pay $35,000 to William Lawrence and the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition who sued for failing to provide them qualified interpreters. The agreement with the Justice department includes staff training on ADA law and posted signs about the availability of services for the hard of hearing. Arapahoe County and Englewood also agreed to use modified handcuffing when dealing with anyone who uses sign language to communicate. Lawrence was arrested in 2011. Englewood officers did not provide him with an interpreter during questioning and he was kept handcuffed, leaving him unable to communicate.

Cover up at deaf school?

Parents of students who attend a state school are suing because administrators allegedly covered up the sexual abuse of five children by a teen at the school. The former principal of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind says its not true. The school kept records but did not report the assaults to law enforcement as required by law, according to police. Another student admitted assaulting other students to school officials in 2011. Lawyers for former principal Louis Tutt appeared in court for a hearing yesterday (Thursday), asking that the lawsuit be thrown out, claiming their client has immunity as a state employee. An arrest warrant has been issued for Tutt who is not in the state.
