Name Change for SC School Foundation

The fundraising arm of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind is changing its name. The Walker Foundation will now be known as the SCSDB Foundation. Foundation board chair Lynne Burton says, “We have a new name but the same important mission. The school has strong support throughout the state, and our foundation needed a name that individuals could immediately connect with the outstanding reputation of the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. The new name will provide greater clarity and more immediate recognition of our foundation’s mission. The school’s administration building, called Walker Hall and named for the Newton Pinckney Walker in the 1840s, will keep its name. Read more here.

More on the man killed after knocking on a door

We're now learning more about the man shot and killed in San Antonio, Texas when he knocked on the door of a woman who is now in police custody. William Farr was from Spartanburg, South Carolina where he attended the attended the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. WECT-TV has this video report on Farr's background.

ASL teacher/Bilingual Coordinator position open at SCSDB

The School for the Deaf at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind in Spartanburg is in search of an American Sign Language teacher who would also be a Bilingual Coordinator for the school. We shared with you a link to an amazing story about a South Carolina teenager who will soon be the first deaf person to compete nationally in the International Thespian Society competition. But sadly, there were no captions with the video report and no text version of the story to read. Now, here's the good news: We pointed out the problem to Nathaniel Cary, the journalist who put the story together. Nate not only added text, he quickly got captions added as well. Captioning at SC Stadium

The University of South Carolina showed off its new stadium captioning boards for the first time at this past Saturday's game against Arkansas. It's a way for football fans with hearing loss to know what's being announced on the public address system. The ribbon board at Williams-Brice Stadium is about four feet wide and three feet high and located just below the new video scoreboard. It cost $100,000 to get it installed.

SC Shooting

A search is underway for a South Carolina man who they say shot a deaf man who has been taken to a local hospital in Richland County. The victim was visiting his parents at the time and an investigation is underway into what led to the shooing.

Chili Cook-off Tomorrow

The South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind hold it's annual chili cook-off tomorrow. The 2012 So You Think You Can Cook Chili Cook-off fundraiser takes place at downtown Spartanburg’s Indigo Hall. Eleven teams are competing. There is more information here.

Theater in South Carolina

Battle in the Carolinas

The North Carolina School for the Deaf beat the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind fell 46 to 36 last night. The Bears are now 2-2 while the Green Hornets fell to 0-6. The two wins are a major turn around for the Bears after going through a winless streak of almost 5 years.

Tactile Flag Donation

When blind students at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind recite the Pledge of Allegiance they will now have a better idea of what they are saluting. The Kate Barry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution donated 17 tactile American flags to the school. Members of the group in Missouri hand-crafted the flags so that students can feel the 50 stars and the 13 red-and-white stripes. The school still needs another 57 flags.

Meetings in Carolina

The South Carolina Assoc. of the Deaf holds its annual meetings in Spartanburg starting tomorrow through the 8th. For more information, click here.

Restaurant Owner Arrested

Myrtle Beach police arrested a South Carolina restaurant owner for allegedly refusing to serve a woman with a service animal. Hrachya Avagyan, owner of Seafood World, told the woman her business was private property, even though the dog had a wore a Service Animal vest and the woman carried the proper paperwork showing it is certified. The law doesn't require a disabled person to reveal his or her disability.

Worker Dies at Deaf School

An accident at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind left a construction worker dead today. Joseph Daniel Hall of Spartanburg fell a short distance from a ladder while installing an electrical box. He was an employee of Bobby Jackson Electrical. School officials have released this statement:

“Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family upon their loss. The contractor, subcontractor and local officials are currently investigating the cause of death.We commend our campus emergency team and local emergency medical services for responding quickly and appropriately. We will continue to keep the family in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of their loved one.”

Coach Resigns

The head coach at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind has resigned, in the middle of the season. Don Creech said the move was for “personal reasons.” The decision apparently took Athletics director Kim Speer by suprise. Creech's team became national champions in 2008 and Creech was named national coach of the year in 2008. The team hasn't lost a game to a deaf school during the last two seasons.

Football First

For the first time in school history, tonight's South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind football game will be broadcast on the radio. ESPN Spartanburg will carry the Green Hornets game on both AM and FM. The station also plans to donate money to the school.
