SF gay chorus using ASL

A Bennett Song Holiday

A new video is out today that features five deaf actors who use ASL throughout the film. In A Bennett Song Holiday a family learns the true meaning of the holidays as they solve a community crisis and adapt to big changes. Mrs. Bennett is expecting her first child--to go along with 14 adopted children. Meanwhile, they team up to take on a powerful real estate developer who is threatening to close down their uncle’s community center. Its a sequal to the family romantic comedy Bennett’s Song. Doll With Cochlear Implants For Christmas

A little girl living near Oklahoma City wanted a doll for Christmas that looked like her, including her cochlear implants. Thanks to the work of a high schooler and a 3D printer, she got her wish. KWTV has a video report.

The Grinch told in ASL

The daughter of Sheena McFeely and Manny Johnson is back again with a new Christmas story. Last year it was The Night Before Christmas and this year it is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Shaylee is featured in both videos in promotion of her parents ASL learning site called ASLnook. Take a look at what this Cindy Lou look-alike does to the story.

ASL of Twas the Night Before Christmas

Sheena McFeely has two daughters--one is deaf like her and the other hearing. You can see one of the daughters (Shaylee) signing a version of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas in the video posted below. Cute CODA's Holiday Concert signing caught on video

A kindergartener made sure her deaf parents were able to follow the singing of her classmates by signing her way through several Christmas songs at her school's holiday concert. Tampa's WTVT-TV (Fox 13) has the video of the demonstrative CODA.

Christmas comes early for School for the Deaf

American Girl Doll with Hearing Aids

You can buy an American Girl with hearing loss this Christmas. The toy maker says on its site "our experts will perform a permanent piercing behind her ear to ensure the hearing aid is expertly fitted—in one or both ears." The hearing aids are removable and cost $14. Another American Girl doll comes with a service dog. Rather than looking like stereotypical models, American Girl dolls look more like the children who own them. And, they can be fitted with glasses, braces, crutches a wheel chair, or even without hair for those who have lost hair to cancer. Find out more here.

Gally Show

Gallaudet University offers its version of A Christmas Carol starting this Thursday (Nov. 27-Dec 23). Both hearing and deaf actors will perform A Commedia Christmas Carol in the stylized tradition of commedia dell’arte, a method known for its broad physical gesture and comic characters who wear masks. For authenticity, the actors will use home signs and BSL (British Sign Language) along with spoken English. These performances include actors from Faction of Fools, a dramatic troupe now based at the school. Find out more here.

Deaf Director

The director of a stage production of A Christmas Carol in Roanoke, Virginia is nearly completely deaf although the cast is hearing. Betsy Foster started losing her hearing as a teen and doctors have not determined the cause. At the age of 23, Foster has a degree in theater and reads lips. Her mother helps by serving as her sign language interpreter at show practices. Carol is sponsored by the New Century Community Church and takes place at the Roanoke Civic Center this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.
