The Visual Learning Summit

A first-of-its-kind conference set for this Friday and Saturday will address the challenges faced by deaf children who are learning to read. The University of California at Davis summit is co-sponsored by Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center on Visual Language and Visual Learning along with the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain and the departments of psychology and linguistics at the school. Hearing children learn to read by sounding out words, but deaf children have to do the same thing without that help. The organizers of the Visual Learning Summit believe growing up in a primarily visual world impacts language, memory and attention. Not only are there questions about how to best educate deaf children, there is a great deal for the hearing to learn from visually oriented learners.
